Irene power outages in NC drop below 40,000

The power continues to come on across eastern North Carolina, with the outages caused by damage from Hurricane Irene now below 40,000.
Progress Energy said late Wednesday approximately 5,312 customers were still without electricity. The Raleigh utility is targeting midnight Wednesday for restoring power to 99 percent of its customers who lost power during the storm. Dominion Power had 23,454 customers in North Carolina without power late Wednesday night.
North Carolina's electric cooperatives and municipal power agencies reported roughly 9,000 outages late Wednesday night.
Those numbers were expected to fall Wednesday as utility crews fanned out around the coast fixing broken electrical connections and downed wires.
